Technology is great, isn’t it? Thanks to Smart meters, we can see our energy usage in real time, and with smart thermostats we can control our heating from anywhere.
And living sustainably is made easier still with apps, which put the power to protect the planet in your pocket (try saying that five times fast). Here’s our 6 favourite apps that make sustainability easy.
1. Think Dirty
Many beauty and skincare products contain harmful chemicals that you wouldn’t want to put out into the environment, let alone on your skin. With the Think Dirty app you can scan a product’s barcode to check for potentially toxic ingredients, and take steps to minimise or eliminate them.
2. Pure Planet
No list of the best apps that make sustainability easy would be complete without a mention of our very own Pure Planet app.<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rBPVTVEebFs" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
That’s because the app enables you to;
- Track your energy usage and identify trends to cut carbon and save money on your energy bills
- Connect your petrol, diesel or electric vehicle to understand it’s carbon impact or saving
- Find your perfect EV match and make the swap to an electric car
- Stay in control of your energy – move home, send us a meter reading, change your tariff and check your payments all from within the app.
The full Pure Planet app experience is exclusively available to our Members, but anyone can download it, for free, and get a quote. Then, once you’re a Member, you’ll unlock all of the app’s smart features.
Do you struggle to stay focused when working or studying? The Forest app can help with that. Simply plant a tree when you want to focus and it’ll grow while you’re working (and off your phone). You’ll earn virtual coins as you go, which can be spent on planting real trees. Check your phone while working though, and your tree will die. If that’s not an incentive to cut procrastination, I don’t know what is.
4. Too Good To Go
Fight food waste and fill your fridge at the same time with the free Too Good To Go app. Use it to find ‘surprise bags’ of unsold food in your local area, buy for as little as £2, collect and enjoy! Every surprise bag you rescue saves 2.5kg of CO2e.
It’s thought that Google processes around 63,000 search queries every second. Just imagine the difference we could make if those searches helped plant trees. Well, with the Ecosia app they can! Browse and search the web like you would with any search engine, and Ecosia will use 100% of the profits it makes from search ads for climate action – at least 80% of profits finance tree planting projects around the world. One Ecosia search removes about 1kg of CO2 from the air.
6. Good On You
Shop better with the Good On You app, which allows you to easily check the impact of your favourite fashion brands on the planet. There’s thousands of brands listed in the directory, and you can request a rating if you can’t find what you’re looking for. If you’d prefer not to download the app, you can also browse the directory from the Good On You website.
