It’s not everyday you get the chance to talk to the creator of one of the world’s most iconic environmental awareness campaigns. But yesterday, as co-founder of Pure Planet, from my living room in Calne, Wiltshire, I chatted to the humble and inspiring Andy Ridley, co-founder of Earth Hour, in his basement in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.

Ahead of tonight’s Earth Hour at 8.30pm — which this year has gone digital for obvious reasons — we filmed our discussion about how Earth Hour launched in Sydney, in 2007 and how it has since been adopted by almost every country on the planet. In its symbolic moment of darkness, Earth Hour offers a future of light.

We reflected on today’s rise in climate change activism, Greta, and reasons to be hopeful and optimistic amid the Covid-19 adversity.

Andy nailed it for me when he said — that beyond all the terrible and heartbreaking disease, disruption and death that we are all witnessing right now — one thing has emerged for the good.

We have proven we can change if we want to.

I hope you enjoy our chat.

Happy Earth Hour.
