We’re award-winning! Here’s why Pure Planet’s a great place to work

Best Companies has announced the UK’s Best Companies to Work For in 2021, and we’re proud to have placed in three categories.

We’re over the moon to announce that we’re in the top three Best Mid-sized Companies to Work For in the UK for 2021, according to Best Companies. We’re also the winner of the Top 10 Utilities Companies to Work For and ranked number 6 in the South West’s 50 Best Companies to Work For.

The latest accolades join our growing trophy cabinet. Last year we were ranked number two in the 100 Best Small Companies to Work For by the Sunday Times, and won Best Company to Work For (SME) at the UK Employee Experience Awards just last week.

It’s been a tough year, so to be recognised by Best Companies again, despite the challenges of working from home, makes us especially proud.

But what makes Pure Planet one of the best companies to work for in the UK? As a new starter (I joined at the end of March), I’ve found working at Pure Planet a breath of fresh air, despite not having actually ‘met’ any of my teammates yet.

Here’s why I think it’s a great place to work.

We’re all treated the same

All Pure Planet employees receive the same benefits — that includes private healthcare and a health cash plan, unlimited holiday, an ethical pension and flexible working, regardless of where they are on the pecking order.

And before you ask, there’s a minimum amount of holiday that we all have to take too, in case anyone’s worried about taking more than someone else.

They practice what they preach

A lot of companies talk about their employees’ wellbeing, but how many actually support their teams in finding a healthy work life balance? During the first lockdown, Pure Planet banned meetings over lunch to make sure everyone got a break from their screen, and I never feel obligated to work past 5.30.

Everyone’s really friendly

And not in a creepy way. Thanks to weekly Donut chats, which actively encourage us to take time out of our days to talk about anything but work, I’ve met people outside of my own team.

I’ve also connected with like-minded colleagues thanks to the myriad of Slack channels available to join — my favourites so far include the book club, one about plants, and pure_pets, where we’re kept up-to-date on our four legged friends. In fact, Pure Planet has a dog-friendly office, which was reason enough for me to apply to work here.

We’re digital first

That meant that joining during a pandemic and setting up my home office wasn’t a hassle. Before I started, Pure Planet sent me all the kit I’d need including a laptop stand and monitor so I wasn’t craning over one tiny screen. And now I’m here, everything I need to get my job done is available online.

That doesn’t mean it’s a faceless organisation though. The founders, Steven, Chris and Andrew are in touch regularly through our whole company meetings, and Steven, who’s closest to my area of work, checks in every week or so with a call. Off-topic chats are encouraged on Slack too through our People Director Rich’s questions of the day.

We have a clear purpose

Finally, and most importantly, I know exactly why I’m here and what I’m contributing to, which really motivates me to do the best job I can for our Members and the planet.
