As the days start to get shorter and the cold mornings chillier, it’s clear that winter is well and truly on the way. It’s about this time of year that most of us will be switching on our central heating for the first time.

With most British homes being heated by fossil fuels (85% of us have a gas boiler), this results in a big increase in carbon emissions — a whopping 37% of the UK’s annual carbon footprint is from heating. It’s no surprise that heating is the biggest single contributor to our household carbon footprint.
Great progress has been made on decarbonising our electricity supply — 38% of the grid’s electricity now comes from renewable sources. But the same cannot be said for heat. Less than 2% of British homes use low-carbon heating.
Pure Planet’s gas is 100% carbon offset. This means that if you use gas to heat your home, we’ll offset the emissions by supporting valuable carbon reduction projects around the world. Pure Planet supports projects like this one to protect the Amazonian Rainforest. To date, by using renewable electricity and carbon offsetting gas, our Members have saved more than 900,000 tonnes of CO2 entering the atmosphere.
Although low-carbon heating is not widespread in our homes, there’s no reason why our traditional heating systems shouldn’t be smarter.
A smart thermostat is a great way of achieving this without the complexity of replacing your existing boiler. By intelligently controlling your heating, smart thermostats can help to improve the comfort of your home while reducing energy bills and carbon emissions. A smart thermostat could reduce your energy bill by up to £120 a year.
Hive Active Heating allows you to control your heating from your smartphone — it can even send you notifications if you leave home and forget to turn off your heating. It’s the most popular smart thermostat in Britain, as well as being a Which? Best Buy. To find out exactly how much you could save with a smart thermostat, try out Hive’s handy savings calculator. Boiler, heating, and home care cover
Don’t forget that a well maintained boiler will result in lower heating bills and carbon emissions. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Hometree to provide boiler, heating, and home care cover. As standard, all Hometree packages come with an annual boiler service — keeping your boiler running smoothly, safely, and efficiently, all year round. Get a quote for Hometree cover here.
Decarbonising our home heating is vital to hitting Net Zero by 2050. It’s definitely one of the trickiest areas to tackle and although a well maintained, smart heating system will be more carbon efficient, it clearly can’t be the end goal.
At Pure Planet, we’re always looking to the future. Over the next few months, we’ll be trialling some of the low-carbon heating technologies that could be part of the solution. Keep an eye out on our Pure Futures page and the Community for an update.
